Beautiful note taking without perfectionism

how the modubooq™ idea started – blog series #3

Welcome to this blog series!

I am Marije, product designer at PATboard and this is the third blog of our blog series. I covered these topics in the previous 2 blogs:

  1. The philosophy behind modubooq
  2. My personal journey with note taking and how I aimed to solve the first practical challenge I encountered: organizing my notes.

In this blog, I want to talk about perfectionism in note taking and why I think modubooq™ can help with this.

Suffer from perfectionism when note taking

You may have guessed it, but I can sometimes suffer from perfectionism. I often make spelling mistakes in my texts and layouts when I write notes. Then it always comes down to 3 choices:

  1. scratch it out
  2. correct with some kind of correction tool
  3. rip the page out altogether.

But with all of these solutions you can always see the trace of mistakes. It may seem like an insignificant problem: ‘not being able to make your notes look nice’, but I found I wasn’t the only one who was bothered by this in the world of note taking fanatics.

Aesthetics and functionality go hand in hand

Rationally, I know that it doesn’t matter what notes look like, as long as they are functional, help me to think and to take action. But in my opinion, and I suspect that this applies to many others, appearance plays a big role in the usefulness of my notes. After thinking about this for the first time I concluded that it didn’t feel good to have a page with a messy handwriting between the pages that had turned out “well”.

I could really notice the difference between neatly written notes and messy ones. Having neat and organized pages with an occasional doodle makes me feel happy and encouraged to keep writing and revisit my notes. Looking at them makes me feel calm and in control of my thoughts, goals and to do’s.

The opposite happens when the pages do have the same information, but are cluttered with mistakes and unwanted writings.

The internet sets the bar high for note taking

After searching around for other note taking fanatics on blogs and forums that felt the same way, I found that I was far from the only one with these feelings. In fact, I suspect that most note taking fanatics are perfectionists as well. It blew my mind how big the note taking community is. And, specifically, the bullet journal community.

There are many influencers on social media that are displaying their colorful layouts and get many likes for it. And, like many others, I immediately got inspired to achieve the same eastatics as them. But I quickly realized that it takes a massive amount of time to match that level of perfection. For some people it might be easy and fun to make it like that, but for me it overshot the mark.

So I was convinced: modubooq™ had to make my notes beautiful without having to spend a lot of time on them.

The perfect tool for note taking: Colorful and modular pages with a premium look

In my opinion, the modubooq™ solution consists of 3 things:

  1. First, the colored borders of the pages give your notes a nice display.
  2. Second, the duratech3™ material gives the text a luxurious look. It is like giving a painting a frame and a classy finished coating.
  3. And third, I no longer stress about making one-time perfect pages because you can always remove, erase or save them in a different place. With all of this combined I want to help people get things done and feel good about note taking without wasting time.
